If Earth were an operating system, physics would be the kernel. No patches, no hotfixes, no one files a PR against gravity. It predates every abstraction layer, and everything runs on top of it whether you like it or not.

The water cycle is a fixed-size connection pool. Drought is pool exhaustion. Rain is the recycler running. The pool doesn’t grow, it just rebalances, sometimes badly. If you’ve ever watched a system starve because one consumer hogs connections, you’ve seen California.

DNA is source code with integrity checks at copy time. Every organism ships a signed binary. Mutations are bit flips – most get rejected at runtime. Cancer is a process that escaped the sandbox.

Which means evolution is continuous deployment straight to production. No staging environment, no rollback plan. Random commits, no author, no message. The diff sometimes reads “removed an eye, shipped anyway.” The feedback loop is excellent. The latency is four billion years and counting.

Instinct is what survived that loop – compiled code, native binary, zero warmup. A spider spinning its first web runs no interpreter. A human learning to drive is still in the interpreter phase for the first year, and performance degrades under emotional load.

Topsoil is L1 cache. Bedrock is cold storage. We’ve been hammering the hot path for ten thousand years of agriculture and nobody’s monitoring the eviction rate.

When something finally stops running, decomposition kicks in. Fungal networks are reference-counted – when nothing holds a reference to an organism, reclamation begins. Mushrooms are the GC daemon.

And climate is the distributed consensus layer underneath all of it. Eventually consistent. All nodes will agree on temperature, eventually. The SLA is measured in centuries. Complaints go to /dev/null.

Somewhere, a very patient sysadmin is watching all of this. Hasn’t rebooted in 4.5 billion years. Impressive uptime, honestly.
